The Earl Marriot Mariners Grade 8 team trailed 28-14 early in the third quarter then stormed back with 36 unanswered points to post a home field 50-28 victory over the previously undefeated Pitt Meadows Marauders on Monday.
The game got off to an ominous start for the Mariners when Pitt Meadows scored on the game’s first play from scrimmage, but the Mariners responded with a touchdown of their own, a 20 yard run by Holden Allen capped off by Eisa Iqbal’s 2 point convert made the score 8-8 after one quarter of play.
The Mauraders took a 16-8 lead early in the second quarter and once again the Mariners responded, this time Lachlan Scardina hit Ryan Baker with a 10 yard touchdown pass to pull EMS within two, the 2 point convert attempt was unsuccessful and the teams went into the halftime break with Pitt holding a 16-14 lead.
Pitt stormed out of the break with a pair of touchdowns to take a 28-14 lead midway through the third quarter, the resilient Mariners kept pushing forward and a 40 yard touchdown run by Jeff Bates followed by a 40 yard touchdown pass from Scardina to Ryan Baker sent the game into the fourth quarter knotted at 28-28.
It was all Mariners from there, Eisa Iqbal started with a 5 yard run to make the score 34-28, Carter Fenwick followed that with a 25 yard touchdown run and also ran in the 2 point convert to make the score 42-28.
The Mariners defense may have given up more points than any game this year they but also had their best outing of the year, Ty Therrien put the final dagger in the Mauaraders with a 66 yard interception return touchdown to make the final score 50-28 for Michael Mackay-Dunn’s South Surrey squad.
In total the Mariners had four interceptions on the day, Maleeh Monajazeb with a pair, Ryan Baker with one and Theirren’s heroic pick in the final minutes of the game. The defensive line was once again stellar for the Mariners with Thomas Cizmok swatting down a Mauraders pass attempt at the line of scrimmage and Jeff Bates a one man wrecking crew in the Mauraders backfield.
The win improved the Mariners record to 5-0 on the season with one regular season game remaining, at home next Monday November 6 versus cross town rivals the Holy Cross Crusaders.
