Coach Scott Martens goes to South Delta

I want to make sure everyone is aware of Coach Scott Martens coming departure from Earl Marriott. Scott, a South Delta resident, has been offered and accepted a teaching position at South Delta. Coach Martens will be leaving Marriott at the end of this week. Although his departure is sudden, he will continue to lead our Junior Varsity Team till the end of the season. He will be missed. We wish him all the best and I know South Delta is elated to have him as a coach and more importantly, a teacher in the school.

A little history will provide more background on Scott and his tenure here at Marriott. I first came to know Scottie in 2001 when I was coaching at South Delta with the late legend, Brian Higgins. Coach Higgins was always impressed with Scottie’s ability, knowledge of the game and zest to improve as a coach. In 2006, I recruited Scottie to coach at Marriott – Junior Varsity Team when he was working as a youth pastor at Peace Portal Alliance. A few years later after some nudging, Scottie went to Simon Fraser to complete both his degree and teaching credentials. During this time he stayed in touch and upon graduation, it was imperative to have Scottie gain employment here at Marriott and has been teaching/coaching here for the last 5 years.(???) Collectively, we faced a number of challenges together as we nourished the program along the way. But we did share some peaks together – two BC Championships in 2014 and 15 and more importantly Scottie’s impact on our students and athletes. On behalf on everyone connected to Earl Marriott Football, again we send our best wishes and thanks him for his service and positive impact on our students.

Sincerely,

Michael MacKay-Dunn
